Chapter Thirty-Nine

Matt was late. Very late. But after the mind-numbing revelations at Jesse’s his mind was far from Satan’s Twilight and the publishing world.

He checked his watch—9:27. Despite being late, he trudged up the stairs to Stephanie’s Commonwealth Avenue apartment and knocked.

“Matt?” she answered immediately.

“Yeah,” he mumbled.

“C’mon in. You’re late. Is everything okay?” When he stood mute, she added, “Did you have a nice Thanksgiving?”

“Yep,” he answered in a monotone as he followed her into the office. The small room was austere but light and had the benefit of facing on the narrow park that extended the length of the avenue. “You?” Matt asked.

She ignored his question, repeating, “Is everything all right?”

“Sure,” he whispered. He shuffled to the couch and opened his notebook.

“All right, we’ve had this talk before,” Stephanie began.

Matt knew his literary agent and sensed the standard launch—her lecture on staying focused and living up to his potential was on tap. Instead, her expression softened. She’d apparently thought better of it and shelved the speech on how to succeed in publishing.

Stephanie crossed the room and stood in front of him. “What happened?” she asked softly, focusing her enormous green eyes on his.

“Nothing. Let’s get to work.” He shrugged.

Tilting her head to one side, Stephanie bent to get his attention. When he finally lifted his chin she extended her hand, finding his. He resisted at first, but when she took his firmly, he accepted the intimacy.

“Remember a couple of days ago when we talked about that producer, Lawrence Webb?” Matt asked. “The one you told me was a star maker.”

She nodded.

“You were right. He gave Jesse a tryout. He’s offered her a role in his new musical—”

“Okay, so what?”

“She’ll be leaving.”

“It’s only an hour by plane for God’s sake, Matt. She can’t work all the time. You can still see her,” she said, wearing a neutral expression.

“Sounds good, but I’ve never known a long-distance relationship that worked.” He paused, shaking his head. “Besides, I’m guessing that prepping for a big-time Broadway production isn’t a nine to five job.”

“Matthew…grow up,” Stephanie chided. “If you really love her, want to be with—”

“It’s not just what she did. It’s the way she did it!” Matt explained.

Stephanie sat down, his hand still in hers. “Get it all out. You’ll feel better.”

“She kept it a secret—lied about it, sneaking around behind my back. I found out by accident.”

Stephanie’s face showed kindness, compassion…but for just an instant Matt read something else. Satisfaction? Whatever the reaction it was gone in a flash.

“You’re right. That doesn’t sound good,” she agreed, leaving her hand on his. “I know how you feel about her, but look on the bright side. Its better you found out now what she’s really like.”

He managed to give her a weak smile. “Thanks. You’re a good friend, Steph. You’ve done so much, helped me in so many ways.” He squeezed her hand.

“I’d like to think we’ve become good friends,” she whispered. “I’ll do whatever I can to help—you know that.” Her voice faded to a whisper as she worked her fingers into his.
